Starting the Downswing

Creative Commons License photo credit: nsaplayer   Sam Snead once said, ” my belief is that the downswing starts when my left hip turns and leads the way, with the rest of me going along for the ride.”  Unquestionably, Sam Snead had one of the most picturesque golf swings in history. 

How does the downswing begin?  Some say it starts with a hip turn toward the target, or a downward pull of the lead arm, yet others maintain it starts when the lead heel is lowered.  There is no wrong answer.

Since you can only think of one thing at a time, concentrate on one of the above when making the transition from backswing to downswing.  Statistics show that most scratch golfers use the hip turn to begin the downswing.
